This self-initiated illustration was my personal response to the #MeToo movement: having your “no” ignored is a universal experience for all women.
I wanted to depict the frustration of a “soft no” – it’s all too common for women not to feel safe to say no outright, and instead choose to carefully mould words to convey their meaning. There are many reasons behind this behaviour, from the awkwardness of rejection all the way to fear of being harmed. Sometimes it’s the safest way out of an unsafe situation – but sometimes, it can be all too easy for an ill-intentioned individual to ignore a “soft no”.
It’s an art borne out of survival instinct and can be equally life-saving as it can be one’s worst enemy.
